2010 - REGINA PATS - ROSTER FOR THE MOOSE JAW - TRANS CANADA CLASH


First of all an short summary of the last two Trans-Canada Clashes: Saturday afternoon, February, 9, 2008, at the Regina Brandt Centre, Regina Pats Alumni edged the Moose Jaw Warriors Alumni 3-2 in the Trans-Canada Clash. It was the second time the two clubs played against each other. The previous year, in Moose Jaw, on Saturday afternoon, January 27, 2007, the Pats won in a wide open affair 10-9 on Kurt Wickenheiser's last minute goal.

The 2008 game at Regina, a paid attendance of 5,657 saw both clubs put on a solid performance. It was fast skating, five solid body checks, plus sticks getting up high. Moose Jaw Warriors took a 1-0 lead after the first period as Kevin Smyth beat Pats goalie Rod Houk at 8:19 on Theo Fleury's assist. Pats Darrin McKechnie tied the contest at 5:17 of the second period assisted by Frank Kovacs. Derek Kletzel gave Moose Jaw a 2-1 lead at 16:51 of the second period. Regina Pats scored back-to-back goals in the third period. (Derek Eberle scored assisted by Kurt Wickenheiser, then came Brian Varga's winning goal at the mid point of the period.) The game was broadcast on CKRM . Two oldies, Kevin Gallant (Pat's announcer from 1980-1988) and Mal Isaac (1967-1974) called the play-by-play of the game.

The teams have been practicing all week in anticipation of the game and if you haven't seen one of these games before, it TRULY is like going back 20 years and for those of my age group, it's like being a kid again.

Here is this year Regina Pats Roster:

# 2 - Gord Wappel (Defenceman) - 1974-75 to 1977-78 - Gord is the oldest player on the team. One of the players to play on all three Alumni Teams. His best season was his last. Games: 67; Goals: 10; Assists: 30, Points: 40. He was drafted 80th by Atlanta Flames in the 1978 NHL draft. Played 2 games with Atlanta in 1979-80 then the relocated to Calgary and played 18 more games in 2 more seasons. Retired in 1982-83.




# 2 - Chad Wilchynski - Defenceman - (1993-94 to 1996-97) - This will be Chad's first year with the Alumni Team. His best season was during 1995-96 season, Games: 67, Goals 7, Assists: 44, Points: 51. Only played 1 game in 1996-97.







# 3 - John Miner (Defenceman) - Seasons Played: 1981-82 to 1984-85 Nickname: "The Cannon" - Was one of two Regina Pats to have the hardest slap shot, the other was Ernie Hicke (Billy Hicke's younger brother). 1983-4 had 27 goals; 1984-85 had 30 goals - (Team Record).







# 4 - Kyle Deck - (Defenceman) - Seasons Played: 2002-03 to 2006-07 - The youngest player of the Alumni Team.






# 7 - Chris Anderson - Defenceman - Seasons Played: 1998-99 to 1999-00. He is from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Chris Anderson played parts of four seasons with the Tri-City Americans before being sent to the Regina Pats half way through the 1998-99 season. He spent his 20 year old season with the blue and white in 1999-2000








# 10 - Doug Trapp - (Right/Left Wing) - 1982-81 to 1984-85 - Best Season was his last when he finished second in Regina Pats scoring, Gamed played: 72, Goals: 48, Assists: 60, Points: 108









# 11 - Nevin Markwart - (Left Wing) - 1981-82 to to 1982-83 - Has played in all three Trans Canada Clash games. Played only two seasons. His last, played only 43 games, Goals: 27, Assists: 39, Points: 66








# 13 - Brandon Coates - (Left Wing) - 1992-93 to 1993-94 - He only played one game in 1993094 season. In his first season, Games: 36, Goals: 21, Assists: 15, Points: 36











# 15 - Mike Kirby - (Right Wing) - 1988-89 to 1989-90 - Played two seasons. First season, played only two games. Second season, Games Played: 65, Goals: 11, Assists: 16, Points: 27




# 16 - Mike Sillinger - (Centre) - 1987-88 to 1990-91 - In his last three seasons finished first in Regina Pats scoring. During the four seasons played in, Games Played: 266, Goals: 188 Assists: 241, Points: 429. WHL Second Team All-Star and WHL First Team All-Star. Played on the famous "Pup Line". Canada Junior Team 1991 (Won Gold Medal). Was Captain of the Canadian team in 2000 World Championship. Holds NHL record for playing with most teams: 12. In 2009 joined Edmonton Oilers as their Director of Player Development.






# 18 - Kelly Markwart - (Left Wing) - 1987-88 to 1990-91 - One of the players to play in all Trans Canada Clash games.








# 19 - Jamie Heward - (Right Wing) - 1987-88 to 1990-91 - Played on the famous "Pup Line". His best season was his last when he - Games Played: 71, Goals: 23, Assists: 61, Points: 84










# 19 - Brian Varga - (Left Wing/Centre) - 1978-79 to 1980-81 - The oldest Regina Pat Alumni to play on the team. In his last season won the Regina Pats scoring race; Games Played: 68, Goals: 64, Assists: 96, Points: 160







# 24 - Frank Kovacs - (Right/Left Wing) - 1987-88 to 1990-91 - Played on the famous "Pup Line". His best season, was his last with the Regina Pats when he finished second in the teams scoring behind line mate Mike Sillinger; Games Played: 71, Goals, 50, Assists: 51, Points: 101.







# 25 - Kurt Wickenheiser - (Centre) - 1981-82 to 1984-85 - Kurt's best season, was his second year with the team, Games Played: 69, Goals: 45, Assists: 30, Points: 75. Younger brother of Doug and cousin of Olympic champions star Hayley. Kurt has played in all three Trans Canada clash games.









# 27 - Troy Volhoffer - (Left Wing) - Played only one season with the Regina Pats, during 1982-83.








# 33 - Shaun Fleming - (Goalie) - 1998-99 to 1999-00 - In his second season was the back-up goal tender behind Donald Choukalos, Games Played: 22, Minutes Played: 1107, Goals Agains: 58, Empty Net Goals: 1, Average: 3.14







# 1 Rod Houk - (Goalie) 1987-88 to 1988-89. In his second season was the number one goalie, Games Played: 59, Minutes Played: 3,466, Goals Against: 248, Average: 4.29. Has played in all three Trans Clash Alumni Games.






Al Dumba - Coach - Third season as the Coach for the Alumni Team. Coached during 1993-94 season - Games: 36, Won: 17, Lost: 19

As a Player - (Left/Right Wing) - 1973-74 to 1975-76. His best season was last, when he finished third in the team scoring, Games Played: 72, Goals: 44, Assists: 59, Points: 103.
