Junior Hockey's Royal Franchise:

The Regina Pats

Honoured by the International

Sports Heritage Association

2010 Communication

Awards

The International Sports Heritage Association has bestowed one of its highest honours on a recently released publication which chronicles the first 90 years of the Regina Pats.

The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum (SSHFM) in conjunction with co-publisher, the Leader Post Foundation, is pleased to announce a First Place Award in the International Sports Heritage Association’s (ISHA) 2010 Communication Awards.

Junior Hockey’s Royal Franchise: The Regina Pats, published under the auspices of the SSHFM’s Sport History Project, won in the category of Books or Exhibit Catalogues for an Institution with an operating budget exceeding $250,000. This marks the fourth time that the SSHFM has won this award category with a submission from the Sport History Project. The last time was in 2007 with the publication, The Hilltops: A Canadian Junior Football Legacy, co-published with the Saskatoon Hilltops Football Club.

Junior Hockey’s Royal Franchise: The Regina Pats was written by Darrell Davis and Ron Johnston (who did all the research). It represents the first comprehensive recorded history for the 90 year old Regina Pats Hockey Club.

The awards will be formally presented at the upcoming ISHA Conference at the San Diego Hall of Champions in San Diego, California on October 13, 2010. See photo below -

ISHA, first known as the Association of Sports Museums and Halls of Fame, was formed in 1971. Today, with 130 member organizations representing five continents, ISHA is dedicated to helping member institutions better preserve history and educate future generations on the importance of sport as history.

The Pinder family from Saskatoon, Herb, Gerry, Dick, Herb Sr., Ross had controlling interest, plus Wil Kline, Gord Knowlton, Russ Sneath and Bob Strumm all had shares of the owner ship. The nine owners bought the Pats during the summer until 1983 when Herb became the lone owner.

Bob Strumm was named the general-manager (former sportswriter, columnist for the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix and general-manager for Billing Bighorns for two years). Strumm brought in coach Brian Murray from the east to coach the Pats and in the first year led the club to the Memorial Cup final.

After but a couple years, the Edmonton Oil Kings were announce, Tuesday, April 10, as being sold by owner Bill hunter, Vic Mah, Ed and George Assely, Ed Huges, Wayne Tennant to Pat Cooper of Portland, Oregon and moved the team to Great Falls, Montana, were they were know as the Americans. The reason for the move was the poor support the team had received.
